The diving in the Great Barrier Reef is fantastic. While day trips are an option to the nearby Norman and Saxon Reefs from Cairns, liveaboards take you much further up to the Ribbon Reefs where there are some much better dive sites. If conditions allow, you could even out to Osprey Reef.
I've been on three liveaboards to the Great Barrier Reef and loved them all.
